How to properly ask a book blogger for a review.
I’m writing this because I still get requests that just don’t seem to understand that you are selling not just your book, but yourself. I receive upwards of twenty book review requests a day(though it usually averages out to about 1 or 2 a day). If I didn’t have a book monster living on my blog, I’d be hard pressed to find a way to accommodate all the authors I have.
If your request makes it sound like you don’t think anyone will like your book, it’s going to be hard to find reviewers. If you’re cocky and overconfident, and you writing doesn’t back it up, you’re going to have a tough time finding reviewers. If you’re demanding and pushy, you’re going to have a hard time. If you contact a reviewer that’s agreed to read and review your book after getting them a copy, you’re going to have a hard time.
First, you need to keep things in perspective. If your email comes across that you’re worried your book isn’t ready, then that blogger is going to think it isn’t ready.
Second, don’t demand they review your book. I’ve had a few authors that demand I read their book. When they do that, I move their book to the trash. It could be Mark Twain himself asking for the review, but if he’s rude and tactless while asking, I won’t even look at the work.
Third, if a reviewer has agreed to review your book, let them be! You have given them the book, they will get to it when they can!
Patience and a confident humbleness will help you go a long way to getting you some reviews.
